Gasparilla Announces Full Schedule

The First Annual Gasparilla Film Festival Takes Place February 28 - March 4, 2007. 48 Films - 23 Features and 25 Shorts - Highlight Festival. Two U.S. Premieres, twelve Florida Premieres, two Oscar submissions lead selections.
The Gasparilla Film Festival (GFF) presented by Wachovia and Wachovia Insurance Services, announced its film selections February 8 at a party for sponsors, filmmakers, members and supporters.
In the festival's section, Showcase of the Americas, films from North and Latin America will be shown. The Gasparilla Film Festival has selected films from Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico to be shown in its Latin Panorama section of Showcase of the Americas. 638 Ways to Kill Castro is the U.S. Premiere of this provocative documentary. Two shorts and the feature Que Tan Lejos, are Florida Premieres. Two of the selections, Maroa (Venezuela ) and Cinema, Aspirins and Vultures (Brazil) are those countries' Oscar submissions. Other films in this section include: El Bolero, Mexico: Chasing the American Dream, Tell Me Cuba, Memorias del subdesarrollo (RETRO film), Orozco:Man of Fire, Barrio Cuba, Hay Cosas No Se Dicen, and Cuban Hip Hop: Desde el Principio.
Those feature films from North America include Motherland Afghanistan, a documentary by Florida filmmaker, Sedika Mojadidi, who will attend the screening of her film; Callback, a drama most actors can relate to; Say I Do, a Friday night date movie, by Ron Vignone, who will attend the screening of his film; The Immaculate Misconception, a U.S. Premiere; and An American Opera, a U.S. Theatre Premiere, a disturbing documentary about the thousands of animals that were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
In the festival's Fun & Fear section, Romanian film, 12:08 East Bucharest shows the humor into the search of one man trying to find an answer to a 16-year-old question. Korean cult horror film, The Host, makes it way onto the screen at Channelside while Monster of Phantom Lake - a retro-like 50's, b-grade horror flick, is being shown as part of a Happy Hour Screening on Friday, March 2, at Gaspar's Grotto in Ybor City. Dark Corners, a smart thriller where terror breeds in the shadow of the soul, makes its FLORIDA PREMIERE at GFF.
In a nod to our renowned Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, GFF has selected three films for its New Horizons section. Purvis Of Overtown, is about a Miami painter who reflects the darkness of ghetto poverty and fallen dreams. Orozco: Man of Fire is a visual and whimsical documentary of portrait Mexican muralist, Jose Clemente. NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting, a FLORIDA PREMIERE, delves into the exploration of graffiti as a worldwide cultural phenomenon.
In its Young Filmmaker Series, films from those as young as 9 - and up to 25 - will be shown as part of a Student Day during the festival, presented by International Academy of Design and Technology, on Saturday, March 3 beginning at 11am at Channelside Cinemas 10. Nationally recognized film, Third Monday in October, will also screen as part of Student Day. This documentary follows the 2004 elections - those of 12-year-olds- vying to lead their middles school student councils. Parents of students will want to see Purgatory House, a film written by and starring 14-year -old Celeste Davis. This film offers an inside glimpse of how it feels to be a teen in today's disconnected world. For the older student crowd, GFF has partnered with Campus Movie Fest, the worlds' largest student film festival, to present the top sixteen films from its 2005-2006 festival competition. Student admission will be $5.
Two different groupings of shorts will be shown in the festival: Florida Shorts and Latin Shorts. Florida Shorts will screen Thursday, March 1 at 5:30pm and Latin Shorts will screen Sunday, March 4, at 2pm.
On Saturday, March 3, a FREE FAMILY NIGHT SCREENING will take place at Hyde Park Village. Hands - on activities for the kids will begin at 4pm and the screening under the stars beginning at sundown will be the 25th anniversary of E.T.
